Dr Zoe Williams On The Benefits of Walking Briskly and A Social Prescribing Walking Group at a GP’s Surgery

June 26, 2018 - Mike Dilke

On this edition of the RELAXBACK UK Show Dr Zoe Williams, GP and Clinical Champion for Physical Activity and Lifestyle at the Royal College of GPs tells us about the benefits of walking briskly. Also Dee Ashpool talks about the walking group that she leads from a GP surgery in Kenilworth.

Public Health England and the Royal College of GPs are encouraging adults to focus on walking briskly rather than counting steps to improve their health. Just 10 minutes of brisk walking a day counts as exercise and can help protect and improveyour health. Listen to Dr Zoe here to get more information on how it can help you get fitter and healthier.

Active 10 is a free app which shows how much brisk walking you are doing and provides tips and ancouragement on how to fit 10 minute burts of brisk walking into your day. See here for info and to download.

Dee Ashpool is a fantastic lady. She works at a GP surgery and then on her day off she volunteers to lead a walking group based at the same surgery. She has seen the health and wellness of the walkers improve through this simple exercise. This is an example of social prescribing in action that is really getting results. Hear Dee's story here.

The umbrella organisation for these walk is Walking for Health and if you want to join a group or help lead a walk click here for information in your area.
